Also you can decide to relax at the hotel.

Pick up at 8:30 am from your hotel in Arusha & depart for Arusha National Park. Walking with a park ranger, you will have a picnic lunch and a safari drive in the park. The park is at the base of Mount Meru, which is good for climbing. It has a range of habitats including forest – home to the black-and-white colobus monkey – and is excellent for birding. Several lakes often host flocks of flamingos. The park’s appeal is mainly its scenery. The habitat diversity spans from mountainous rainforest to moist savannah to alpine moorland. After the safari drive, you will head back to your Camp/Lodge where a delicious dinner awaits you.

Arusha to Central Serengeti

  • Drive Time: Arusha to Central Serengeti takes about 7 to 7.5 hours (305 km / 189.5 miles)
  • Meals:  Breakfast & Dinner – at the Lodge / Picnic Lunch – outdoor

Your safari will begin at 8 am in the morning with a pick up from your hotel in Arusha. With everyone aboard, you will head towards Serengeti National Park. The 240 km drive will be covered in about 6 hours. “Serengeti” means endless plains in the local African language and watching the grassland stretch out as far as the eye can see and eventually merging with the sky at the horizon is an absolutely breathtaking view. With an overall land area of 14.763 km², it puts our ideas about distance to shame. The Serengeti also houses the glorious “Big 5” (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard). Along with the “Big 5”, a very pleasant sighting would be one of Africa’s most beautiful animals – the impala. The Serengeti ecosystem supports the greatest remaining concentration of plain game in Africa. The legendary Serengeti National Park is the most renowned safari destination for its incredible population of lions and leopards. The central portion of the Serengeti, known as “Seronera Area”, is one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park. It features the Seronera River, which provides a valuable water source and therefore attracts wildlife well-represented by most of the Serengeti’s species. In Seronera, one must really look out for the many lion prides that thrive in this region. You must also look out for the Serengeti “Kopjes” which are massive boulders of granite standing in a sea of grass. They provide ample shelter to a large variety of flora and fauna. A picnic lunch will be eaten during the day-long safari drive itself. The eventful day comes to an end with a hearty dinner and a good night’s rest in your accommodation.

Health and Safety

Mountains in the world can sometimes be dangerous and hazardous – especially in high altitude.
It is therefore important to:

1. Be well equipped.
2. Let your expedition leader know your health history.
3. Have a good communication system.
4. Have a good basic first aid kit and know how to use it.
5. Be able to identify mountain illnesses.

At high altitudes the amount of oxygen decreases dramatically. This can result in medical urgency that must be a concern to every hiker.

AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness)
Signs include: Headache, nausea, fatigue, malaise, loss of appetite and difficulty in sleeping.
Slow down, stay in camps, drink water and rest while the body adjusts to the altitude. If symptoms persist after 48 hours, descend.

HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Aedema)
Symptoms include: Shortened breath during exercise progressing to shortened breath while resting, a dry cough deteriorating to a frothy sputum, audible gurgling (rales) from the chest area, increased heart and breathing rate.
Descend immediately and seek medical attention. Descending is the treatment. It can progress quickly to a point where the patient cannot walk. It doesn’t improve with rest at the same altitude.

HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Aedema)
Symptoms include:- AMS that progress to severe headaches, loss of coordination, slurred speech, irrational behaviour, coma and death.
Descend immediately, Hace can quickly progress to lethal stage.

Prevention of AMS, HAPE and HACE

Allow 2 nights at 10.000ft or at higher altitude at around 14,000ft. Before proceeding higher, increase fluid intake to 4-6 liters per day. Avoid extreme physical exertion and eat a light diet rich in carbohydrates. Take symptoms seriously. Rest and acclimatize if AMS is suspected. Report to ranger’s rescue station and descend immediately if HAPE or HACE is suspected.

However, it is important to drink plenty of water slowly to allow your body to get used to the altitude.
